Homeless Women in Findlay: A Rising Concern
The number of homeless women in Findlay, Ohio, seeking shelter has doubled from last year. With the help of a local family’s donation, City Mission, a homeless shelter, is expanding its services to better support these women and their children.
Expanding Services for Homeless Women
City Mission is witnessing a surge in the number of women with children needing shelter. “Women with children are the fastest growing homeless population,” says Kathryn Bausman, Executive Director of City Mission. This trend holds true in Hancock County as well.
Currently, City Mission has 122 beds and five family rooms. However, when the shelter reaches a capacity of 90 people, it is fully occupied. Last year, City Mission served 19 families with 33 children; this year, the numbers have risen significantly, with 40 families and over 55 children seeking help.
Creating a Safe Environment
One major challenge City Mission faces is maintaining a secure and healthy environment for families. The current facility hosts individuals with Mental health and substance use issues, making it less ideal for children. This is why the expansion is crucial.

New Beginnings on North Main Street
Thanks to Jeff and Anne Mary Whitman, who donated a building on North Main Street, City Mission can now provide a better environment. The building, previously occupied by the Family Resource Center, offers 18 rooms, with nine set to be used immediately.
The new facility will feature a large playroom, a family space, and individual rooms with private bathrooms. This space will also allow other agencies to come on-site, providing women and children with more integrated services.
Challenges Faced by Homeless Women with Children
Charity Hensley, City Mission’s Program Coordinator, explains that women entering the shelter with children need more attention than single individuals. They need help with school enrollment, Vaccination records, and addressing any issues the children or mothers may be experiencing. By focusing on these areas, City Mission aims to move these families towards permanent stability faster.
Future Plans for City Mission
Once the new location on North Main Street is operational, City Mission plans to expand its services further. The current location will serve individuals who may need help on a more immediate basis, ensuring everyone in Findlay who needs support receives it effectively.
